What Is Web Hosting?

Having a website means that it needs to be hosted somewhere and if your website is used in some way to help your business, it is important to have reliable web hosting.

What is reliable website hosting?

Reliable website hosting does not just mean that everything runs perfectly fine now. It means that when your business grows and more potential customers are visiting your website, the server that is hosting your website needs to be able to handle the additional traffic. It is similar to you trying to open a tonne of applications on a basic entry-level computer; it is going to be slow. If your website is slow, your potential customer will just close your website and leave and you have lost that customer forever.

Like anything, it is key to have the right tool for the job. Having the right website hosting for your needs is paramount.

How do I know which website hosting package is right for me?

When your website is new, you will most probably make use of Shared Hosting. If you have an established website, you are most likely making use of a Managed Server or a Self-Managed Server. Costs vary a lot so it is vital that you have the correct website hosting for your needs to ensure you do not pay too little or too much.

What is Shared Hosting?

Shared Hosting, in short, is where many websites of many different customers are hosted on one server and all these websites are fighting over the same server resources.

The pros of Shared Hosting include:

  • Low monthly cost
  • No technical maintenance needed

The cons of Shared Hosting include:

  • Limited server resources

Luckily, for 90% of all websites, Shared Hosting is a sufficient solution.

What is a Managed Server and a Self-Managed Server?

This is also referred to as a VPS or Virtual Private Server. A Managed Server (or VPS) is similar to Shared Hosting in the sense that you do not need any technical expertise to maintain the server but the main difference is that you have all the server resources available to yourself, which means that your website will generally run a lot faster. All you have to do is upload your website and voila! No advanced technical configurations needed.

A self-managed server is for advanced technical users only. Here you need to install all the server applications required to run a website, which will most likely require that you are a Linux technical expert. You get all the advantages of a managed server but when your website is down or there is a problem with your server, it is your problem. This is the obvious solution for very large e-commerce websites because the server can be configured however needed.

Just like anything, having the perfect website hosting package with the right website hosting company is important. I like to use cars as an analogy. Website hosting companies is like all the different car brands. Website hosting packages is like all the different models. The solution you choose will all depend on the budget you have available, your brand preference and purpose it needs to fulfil.

In Conclusion

Choosing which type of hosting package to sign up for will depend on the amount of traffic your website gets. If it is a new website that is only starting out, shared hosting is sufficient. Luckily, all good web hosting companies make it super easy to upgrade to larger hosting packages as your needs change.
